Physiotherapy and painful sex - Research report with Dr. Mélanie Morin

Dr. Mélanie Morin, P.T., Ph.D., joins the podcast today to talk about her latest research project Randomized controlled trial of multimodal physiotherapy treatment compared to overnight lidocaine in women suffering from provoked vestibulodynia. Click on it to find the article. Essentially, what can physio do for women with pain during sex, how well does it work and how can we implement this into our practice...or if you are a person with painful sex, what you may expect from a physio in this area (and why you should see one!).

She is a physiotherapist specialised in pelvic floor dysfunction and currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. She is also a researcher at the Research Centre of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke specializing in pelvic floor dysfunction and is the founder and director of its Urogynecology research laboratory. She conducted several studies focused on the role of the pelvic floor muscles in the pathophysiology of vulvodynia, postpartum and postmenopausal urinary incontinence using different methodologies (dynamometry, transperineal ultrasound, electromyography). Experimented in gynaecological pain and sexual dysfunction, she has been a principal investigator in several randomized clinical trials evaluating physiotherapy efficacy for women with provoked vestibulodynia including a large multicenter and multidisciplinary randomized clinical trial. Dr Morin has published numerous scientific manuscripts and book chapters on pelvic floor disorders; their multiple citations attest to their relevance for other researchers. Her diversified expertise has led her to be frequently invited as an expert and guest speaker at conferences including ICS/IUGA/IPPS/ISSWSH meeting. She is experienced in systematic reviews and clinical guidelines including her recent involvement in the International Consultation on Incontinence. Dr Morin is involved in several international committees namely the Scientific Board of the International Continence Society (ICS) and the Standardisation of terminology in IUGA-ICS working groups on the assessment of sexual health in women and on pelvic floor muscle function assessment.
