Helping the evidence to work: Sticky health messages for men with Craig Allingham

Craig Allingham is an experienced sports physiotherapist who dragged his rehab skill set for elite athletes into men's health almost 20 years ago. Frustrated at not being able to help his Dad overcome incontinence due to radical prostatectomy, Craig spent years refining a pelvic floor training program for men and testing with clients in his clinic. Results were encouraging with almost every man improving to some degree and many becoming fully continent. As a bonus, many also improved their erectile function. This clinical 'research' was done well before the advent of real time ultrasound and quality investigation into the subtleties of the how the male pelvic floor functions. Happily the clinical tools were well supported by the subsequent research. Realising we had too few pelvic floor physios interested in or working with men, Craig undertook two projects, Firstly he wrote a book for men who couldn't or wouldn't attend a pelvic floor physio to help them navigate their own recovery following prostate cancer treatment (Prostate Recovery MAP - Men's Action Plan is now in it's second edition and fourth printing), and secondly he filled a perceived gap in our professional development with the first Mastering the Martians workshop on the male pelvic floor in 2015. This one day workshop has grown to a two day event and has been held five times in Australia with participants coming from all states, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland. Almost 200 physios have received a basic level of education and experience with assessment and treatment for male incontinence and erectile dysfunction following treatment for prostate cancer.

Craig has retired from clinical treatment while he continues to write and teach in the men's health field as well as working as a business consultant for allied health practices. He holds an adjunct appointment as Assistant Professor with Bond University. His other interests include playing jazz saxophone, bee keeping and motorcycle touring. He also enjoys red wine, dark chocolate and cheese. But who doesn't?
